Hurricane 2010 RaceTo Paintball Tournament Series Info

As previously rumored, Jeff Stein and the New England Hurricanes are proud to formally announce the new Hurricane Tournament Series. The HTS will cater to paintball players in the New England area and serve as a feeder series to tournament paintball on a national level in the PSP. Read on for a first look at the Hurricane Tournament Series.

“The Hurricane Tournament Series (HTS) is the PSP Regional Affiliate League for the Northeast and as such, will play the RaceTo format, following PSP rules and using the APPA system. As with all APPA events, registration will be publicly viewable and scores and schedules will be available online.

For 2010, we will hold 3 events, on 5/23, 7/25 and 9/26. Every HTS tournament is a stand-alone event, so you do not have to buy in for the entire season. Rosters will be limited to 12 players, but will not be locked.

We will run two divisions in 2010. A D3/4 division and a D2 division. Details for both are below:

PPB Exclusive: VICIOUS 2010 Team Guns

Planet Eclipse, VICIOUS, Violent Products and Furious have teamed up to produce one of the nicest VICIOUS guns to date. This gun will feature a Violent trigger (not pictured) in polished red, and a VICIOUS Furious barrel. These guns are super limited, only 20 made. Of the 20, 12 will be egos, and the remaining 8 will be geos. If you are one of the lucky few who snagged one of these, and are the original owner of this gun. During PSP Chicago, you will be taken out to dinner with VICIOUS, have VIP access at the DSS booth (with VICIOUS) and be subjected to GP’s quiet readings under the apple tree.

PSP Webcast is offline for Phoenix

PSP Webcast is offline for Phoenix

Paintball Videographer Patrick Spohrer from Monkey With a Gun has released a paintball news update on his website informing us that the PSP has chosen not to air the webcast in phoenix.

Got word today that the PSP webcast for Phoenix is dead. The economy has hit paintball hard and this webcast is a big mouth of money to swallow. From what they are telling me they would love to bring it back for Chicago, but that’s not fore sure. I need to go back to Hollywood and look for a real job. No ones fault just a sign of the times.

We are really bummed to hear the news. Here is to hoping the PSP brings it back and PRONTO! H/t to BallersCafe for the heads up.

AZPPL Event 1 2010 Scottsdale, Arizona February 20-21, 2010

AZPPL Event 1 2010 Scottsdale, Arizona February 20-21, 2010

ProPaintball correspondant, Tim Cerruti covered the AZPPL’s season opener for us. Read on for the latest AZPPL paintball news and event scores.

The 2 day event started Saturday with lots of cold rain, wind, and teams getting ready for the start of the season with the AZPPL. The Arizona Paintball Players League is one of the new regional series associated with the PSP and their Race 2 format. The teams played hard in their matches fighting to play in finals on Sunday. A decent number of spectators showed up to watch the matches even in the rain. The Sidelines were filled with people yelling and screaming trying to help their favorite teams win.

Sunday the rain decided to stop to allow for some fierce action between the lower divisional teams, and this is especially true with the premier division. In the Premier Division Nuskool went undefeated all the way through finals beating the Hellcats in a 5-2 victory. The event was run extremely well thanks to Ryan Bosch and Jay Martinez of NXe. The quality of the reffing was great thanks to Tim Schroepfer of the PSP and the Players of Scottsdale Elevation making good calls, constantly checking players, and having a good reffing structure to follow. This is definitely the best regional series offered right now in the Southwest and cannot wait to see the progress it makes over the next few events and following seasons.

Scores:

Premier
1st – NuSkool ABC123
2nd – Hellcats
3rd – MPS
4th – ByF8th

Jeremiah “Prince” Labiano’s is back in 2010

Jeremiah “Prince” Labiano’s is back in 2010

Jeremiah Labiano a.k.a Prince, 2008 NPPL ALL STAR pro, formerly of the O.C. Bushwackers is back. He is back with 2009 USPL Series Champions Oakland Blast. He talks to us about getting back into paintball on Blast and about what happened to the Bushwackers.

SEBURO: Oakland Blast called you a couple of weeks ago to play for them in 2010. Tell us about how this came about.
PRINCE: Well I’ve been sitting on my ass on the off season and haven’t played paintball very much due to the main fact that I didn’t know who I was going to play with for the 2010 season and also I’ve just been busy at work (yes I do have a real job). I’ve got a few calls from other teams but no moves were ever made, plus I wanted a local gig. I’ve talked to Jason Bornstein, Dave Baines (before he made the move to impact), and Tyler Harmon about playing for BLAST in 2010 and nothing was really set in stone until the legendary Terry Fong texted me a couple weeks ago and said if I want the spot, it’s mine. I had to take it!

SEBURO: Tell us what you think about joining a team who are the 2009 USPL Series champions and coached by the legendary Bob Long.

PRINCE: I’ve known everyone on the team for a while now. BLAST has been our local sparring partners for th last few years. My strongest relationship I’d say I have with the current members on BLAST are the bros, Jason and Corey. We go way back since before I even played pro and when Corey didn’t even like chicks. I had the opportunity to play with them for a couple of seasons with the Bushwackers, which I definitely enjoyed. Everyone else I’ve known for a while too, but never really had the chance to play on the same team as them so I’m really looking to strengthen my ties with all the other guys on the team this season.

I really feel honored to be given the opportunity to play with BLAST this season. With the team being the USPL series champs last year, I really need to step my game up and bring the heat. I’m not worried at all because we definately got a nasty line up! Playing for Bob is big too! He’s an OG of the game and when I first started playing paintball, he’s one on the people that inspired me to be the best I could be in the sport, which I think got me where I’m at today. Bob definitely knows what he’s doing and I’m excited to work with him this season!

SEBURO: You will be playing with the Bornstein brothers Corey and Jason again who were your teammates on Bushwackers. Are you looking forward to that?
PRINCE: I’m definitely looking forward to playing with jason and Corey again this season. Like I said, we go way back and we’re definately going to have some more memorable moments this season both on and off the field. I can’t wait!

SEBURO: You have been away for most of last season as the Bushwackers slowly disappeared from the scene. What have you been doing in the meantime?

PRINCE: Well, ever since the Bushwackers collapsed, I’ve just been focusing on graduating college, which I’m projected to do this spring, working, and training Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA. To be honest, I didn’t even think I was going to play this season. I just got really burnt out with what had happened with the Bushwackers and after seeing all the drama that was going on in the industry, I was over it. It felt good doing other things, other than paintbalI, in the off season. I could get sloppy on Saturday night and not have to worry about making it to Jackson’s house (big ups to my man Jackson Cheung of San Francisco Explicit) at 7am to bum a ride to Capital Edge Paintball in Sacramento to practice! Also I think training helped me refocus and it got me to where I needed to be for this season, both physically and mentally. I’m looking to do big things in the MMA world too, but now that the new year has arrived it’s time to grind!

SEBURO: Can you tell is what happened to the Ron Kilbourne and the Bushwackers?
PRINCE: To be honest, I don’t know what happened to Ron. After PSP Chicago last year he disappeared off the face of the earth. He wouldn’t answer any phone calls and nobody could get a hold of him, not even the sponsors. Players began dropping like flies and in the end it was just me, Ryan, Chunk, and Mike. Money ran tight and we just couldn’t afford to go to the last events. Even if we wanted to continue to play the USPL, although the entry was already paid, we didn’t have money to travel and also didn’t even have a full roster to compete.

SEBURO: What has happened to the rest of the Bushwackers? We know where Jason, Corey, Greg and Shane went, what about Chunk, Ryan and Neil?
PRINCE: The last I heard from Chunk (Martin), he’s been working and bailing criminals out of jail (he’s a bail bondsman). I think he still plays and helps out and coaches the SCU paintball team. You can find Ryan (Podesta) at the local paintball fields beating up on noobs and working at his 10,000,000 jobs. I think he still has his overseas gig and is going to be playing in the Millenium Series this year. Also he will be becoming a father soon (yeah…I know…Ryan having a kid..scary!). So congrats to him! Neil (Eberle) has been working multiple jobs too and by the way he’s been popping kids out like hot cakes, he’s probably going to need to get another one soon! Mike is playing for Fuzion this season and that’s pretty much it.

SEBURO: Back to you. Tell us about training and fighting MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) – how many fights have you been in since the first one where you pretty much beat that kid up. How much are you into MMA?
PRINCE: I’m doing pretty good fighting. I started off doing Jiu Jitsu and it just led in to MMA and Muay Thai. So far, I’ve fought 2 MMA smokers, 1 MMA Pankration fight, 1 Muay Thai smoker, and a dozen Jiu Jitsu tournaments. Technically theres no winner in smoker fights but check out my videos on youtube (search for “50jerm”) and you can see how I get down! The pankration fight I tapped the guy out in like 2 minutes, and they actually declare a winner so thats the only fight I really consider myself winning. This year I’m looking to fight amatuer MMA and maybe PRO depending on what my trainer wants me to do. Also I’m looking to compete in as many Jiu Jitsu competitions as I can this year. I got first place in the blue belt featherweight division a couple weeks ago and I’m looking to get as many medals as I can! I really got in to fighting last year and I plan on taking this as far as I can, just like I did with paintball.

SEBURO: You are one of the fittest guys I know, you are doing some kind of training every day. What is your routine? How do you find the time to gym, train, study, school and work?
PRINCE: I always find time to work out. I’m a big advocate of working out and staying fit and it’s something I think everyone should do, whether or not you compete in any competitive sport or if your just an average Joe. I usually lift weights 3-4 times a week for at least one hour. I usually do chest and biceps on day one, back and triceps on day two, shoulders and traps on day three, and legs on day 4. I train at least 2 days out of the week with mixture of Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA and this is for at least 2-3 hours a day. I’m a really busy guy. If I’m not at school or work, I’m in the gym lifting weights or trying to choke people out on the mat!

SEBURO: New team – New gun- what is colour scheme you have chosen for the new Bob Long?
PRINCE: We’re shooting Victorys. I went with a different color scheme from my usual red or purple. I’m going to let you guys wait and see when I get it in my hands!

SEBURO: Say something to your fans who haven’t seen you for a while. I’m sure they’d be looking forward to watching you tear up the snake again.
PRINCE: To all my fans out there, if I have any (lol), I want to thank you guys for your support throughout the years. Stay true and keep doing what you guys love to do and do let anyone tell you you can’t do it. Expect big things from BLAST this season and I’m definitely going to try and keep doing what I do best. Getting nasty in that snake! Shout out to all my niggs out there that are still in the game grindin it out every weekend and to my Capital Edge paintball family. Big ups to pbrack.com and If you guys haven’t checked out Pbrack’s new clothing line, go check that out ASAP! If any of you guys are ever in the area and want to train, come check us out at crispimbjj.com for jiu jitsu in Pleasanton CA and True Fight Club for muay Thai in Hayward CA. Good luck to everyone this season and see you all in HB in April! I’m out this bitch!

-Prince

SEBURO: Thank you for your time Prince, I really apprecite it. You have given us a great insight into your life in and out of paintball and we wish you all the best on Blast for 2010 and beyond.

PPB Exclusive: Russian Legion Clone

PPB Exclusive: Russian Legion Clone

Earlier in December, ProPaintball announced that Russian Legion would be shooting the MacDev Clone this year. We received some EXCLUSIVE pictures of their new private label MacDev Clone markers. Along with the pictures came an official statement from Russian Legion. Looks like MacDev should be a strong presence in 2010. Here’s the statement:

The Russian Legion is proud to announce their new gun sponsor for 2010; MacDev. RL will be using the MacDev Clone, and will introduce new custom marker designs throughout the year. We are very excited about this partnership.
All the Russian Legion players got their new Clone Markers a few weeks ago from MacDev Australia, and they wanted to share their first impressions about their new toys: (this is also the finalized roster for Russian Legion 2010)

Kirill Prihidni: I love the gun, and the box actually comes with everything including the barrel, tools, even spare parts, lugs and manual.
Kostia Federov: It shoots softer and more accurately than the LUXE!
Vasia Panteleev: It shoots very straight, and is easy to aim with since its simple design.
Matt Blonski: This gun is hot fire. Shoots soft and straight, and its lighter than anything I’ve ever used.
Maloy Berdnikov: Well… I like it more than my Bazooka.
Dave Bains: I love shooting this gun off the break, since it has almost no kick. you can really let some nice streams go.
Dima Kulikov: The switch from Closer to CLONE was seamless, very easy to get use to.
Justin Rabackoff: Best gun for a front guy by far.
Mishka Kniazev: It has an amazingly close spread at long distances out of the box!
Sergey Sonishkov: Can I make it longer? I am use to my AK.

As you can see everyone thinks these new markers are great. The guns fits very well in your hands and have a great feel to them, and they shoot soft and straight. It is easily taken apart which is a nice change from past markers we have used. In conclusion the CLONE ideally fits our needs in order for us to finish where we want this year. We are very grateful MacDev could send the first markers out so early to Moscow and around the US, so we can get used to them before the first PSP event, Phoenix. Where we will introduce it to competition at the Pro Level.

The RL is also proud to announce that PB Customs Laser Engraving from Germany has joined Legion’s prestigious sponsor list. There are already two new designs for the CLONE markers; one based on the famous Russian AK-47 and military, while the second embraces Soviet stereotypes like Ivan Drago(Rocky 4), Iron netting, the USSR and many more things the team is constantly associated with. The markers are very unique and we have received a few, and we are pleasantly surprised about the high-quality of Laser Engraving which PB Customs can accomplish.

The guns will be available through Virtue Paintball, as well as custom tanks from Guerilla Air for Russian Legion, and other custom soft goods which will announced shortly.

Patrick “Pinky” Hughes: Plans for 2010

Patrick “Pinky” Hughes: Plans for 2010

The 2010 season is starting in just a few short weeks now and we were able to catch up with one of paintballs most recent up and coming players, Patrick “Pinky” Hughes of the San Diego Aftermath family. Pinky worked his way up the divisions and found himself playing with the PRO Aftermath team in the PSP for most of the 2009 season.

Just recently ProPaintball.com broke news of the merger between SD Aftermath and LA Infamous teams to create one super team comprised of both players who’ve been in the sport for as long as most of us can remember as well as much of paintballs young and fresh talent. Of course the merging of two PRO teams means 16+ players fighting to earn their spots on the roster, leaving the rest looking elsewhere to continue playing.

With that being said, Pinky let us in on his plans for the 2010 season, checkout what he had to say:

I thought the season was going to start out good with the LA Infamous & Aftermath merger that all you read about. Long story short some things went down that were not addressed to half of the team and at least for me it just felt like my opinion didn’t matter to much. So some people left to find themselves back in a Red and Black SD jersey. My heart still bleeds Red and Black but for now I will be playing NPPL with Okland Blast and I am very happy about that. When my boy Tyler Harmon hit me up to play with blast I was nothing but excited for the chance to play on a team that was by far my favorite team when I was just a lil’ pup coming up in the world. As for PSP I will be coaching SD Aftermath and trying to make some other power moves in the PRO division. Pheonix is coming up soon and only time will tell what happens. Blast will start grinding the weekend of the 13th and 14th of March. So that’s what’s good with Mr. Pink for 2010. Let’s Rock!!!

Stay tuned to ProPaintball.com for further updates as the season progresses!

Paintball Mask/Goggles Review Part 1 HD

Paintball’s Up & Coming player of the week: Cyril Akita

Paintball’s Up & Coming player of the week: Cyril Akita

Cyril Akita and team L.I.F.T. out of Long Island recently made the move up to Division 1 X-ball. ProPaintball recently had the opportunity to ask Cyril a few questions about himself and the Long Island boys. Read on for an inside look at paintball in Cyril’s eyes.

Name: Cyril Aaron Akita

Age: 19

Hometown: Queenzbridge ( Queens, NY)

Any hobbies other than paintball: Going to the Gym Everyday, hanging with my girlfriend, eating, friends, and playing the game of life.

Team & Home field: Paintball Arena Located in Long Island as well as Outdoor Adventures Chesapeake City.

Position you play: Insert Snake, Back, Anywhere on the Field

Favorite pro team: Ironmen, Arsenal, NYX (RIP)

Favorite pro players: Crunchy, C, G- NO Benedicto

Favorite tournament accomplishment? Chicago 2009 D2 Xball ( Good times)

Advice to any new players? You can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it. Hard work pays off in everything in life. There are no free tickets out there, if you want it you gotta earn it.

Mentors? My mother and father who gave me this opportunity to play this sport I enjoy. They work very hard and have taught me many things that I carry with me even though they don’t think I listen. :)

How is paintball different in Long Island, New York: The paintball scene on Long Island is struggling. Fields are few and far between. In fact there are no real ‘tournament’ fields left on Long Island. Our team trains weekly at Paintball Arena in Long Island and on the weekends we travel an average of 2.5 hours each way to get on a gridded xball field, in fact recently the owners of OACC in MD let our whole team stay the night in his own house, He cooked us dinner, the whole nine yards, Thanks RICK! We have come to realize that in order to compete at a high level this is the way that it has to be. These long trips have brought us together like a family.

Briefly tell us about your team, LIFT:
LIFT has been on the scene here in Long Island for the past 5 years in one shape or another, but last season was our first COMPLETE season, playing all of the events in the PSP. The team’s core is made up of players from Paintball Arena in West Babylon NY. Like any team LIFT paid its dues by competing in every local tournament they could get themselves to. In 2008 the team competed in Division 3 in the PSP, the team grew exponentially during that year. It was our most successful season, getting 3rd place in the Chicago Open. As we prepare for PHX, we have tried to keep the taste of success fresh and train harder and smarter this year as our goal is to stand on the podium all season long in division 1. Our team is one of the most diverse teams there is, we age from 16 to 31, some of us are in college, like myself trying to balance studies with paintball, some of our guys have full blown careers, like JC who is a school teacher. We all come from different family backgrounds as well, my father is from Africa and my mother is from NY. Paintball is the one thing that brings us together, it’s like having a whole other family. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors as well: Paintball Arena in West Babylon NY, DYE Precision, Understood, PB187, PBHeadbands, Draxxus and most recently OACC!

Goals for this season? To win as many events as we can of course! It is my personal goal as well, I would like to win not only for myself, but for the entire state of NY(showing paintball we still got it). We would also like to continue to represent our sponsors to the fullest as well.

San Diego Aftermath picks their pro paintball players!

San Diego Aftermath picks their pro paintball players!

After Mike Hinman announced that his pro paintball team San Diego Aftermath would be merging with Travis Lemanski’s Los Angeles Infamous for the 2010 season, we anticipated that LA Infamous would be the new super team on the paintball circuit. However, recent rumors and paintball news updates indicate that the Infamous roster is filling up and there may not be room for all of the young talent on Aftermath. With Mike refocusing his efforts on developing a new semi-pro squad, we felt it was only a matter of time before he announced which of his former players would be filling the two pro paintball spots on his team.

Earlier this week word came through the chatbox that pro paintball players Steven Pitts and Alex “Mouse” Goldman had returned to the Aftermath program. After news that pro paintball’s Nicky Cuba and Jon Richardson had joined LA Infamous following their release from the pro paintball team L.A. Ironmen, it was clear that the Infamous house was more than over flowing. Alex and Steven decided to make the move back to S.D. Aftermath for the 2010 season to assist the new team in the direction of the Pro paintball ranks.

We caught up with Alex to see what he had to say

Mike first picked me up in 2005 when I was running around S.C. Village with no direction. Since that time he has paved the way for me to accomplish the things I’ve done thus far. I love this team and it’s my time to give back; we’re in it to win it!

Steven Pitts PSP Chicago 2009When we got in touch with Steven, he added:

San Diego Aftermath is the place I’ve called home for the past 4 years. Mike has done everything in his power for us and now I finally get a chance to give back and take the team pro again. I’ve watched the guys on the team progress so much there’s no doubt we’re going to win tournaments this year.

Be sure to watch out for Steven, Alex and San Diego Aftermath this 2010 season!

Rumor of the day: Naughty Dogs find a new home

Rumor of the day: Naughty Dogs find a new home

Pro Paintball insiders have informed us that the Portland Naughty Dogs have signed a multi-year agreement with a major paintball company. With the teams former sponsor Smart Parts currently experiencing financial hardship, it was only a matter of time before someone picked them up.Pro Paintball insiders have informed us that all signs point to the Dogs using head to toe DYE gear, shooting DYE NT’s and possibly Myth regulators and custom bottles from Guerilla air. This would be the second multi-year agreement from DYE that we have heard of in the last couple of days, the last of which involved San Diego Aftermath. Interesting to note, both the Naughty Dogs and Aftermath had previously been using DLX and Shockers from Smart Parts.

For those of you in the Sacramento area this weekend, be sure to stop by Capital Edge Paintball Park and watch the Naughty Dogs practice against San Francisco Explicit.

PPB Interview with Tyler Harmon of Sacramento XSV

PPB Interview with Tyler Harmon of Sacramento XSV

Tyler Dean Harmon recently made the move from Aftermath to XSV. Arthur Chan of Seburo recently had the opportunity to ask Tyler a few questions on the move to one of the biggest names in professional paintball. Read on for an inside look at the moving and shaking currently taking place in pro paintball.

Arthur: How did the move come about – did XSV approached you or you were looking for a move to another team?

Tyler: The move came about for me after Mike Hinman of team Aftermath made the decision to build himself a local empire this season with the talent that he has all around him in southern California. This way there wouldn’t have to be a separation of distance for his team to practice every single weekend and he could build something lasting that won’t have to change every season. Junior Brown approached me at the end of 2009 with the very same idea in mind as Mike; to build something local with the talent we have up here in northern California. I have known a lot of the guys on the team since the very beginning of my paintball experience and was more than happy (STOKED!) to be a part of the re-birth of a team I have watched grow and flourish ever since the first practices here in Modesto out at Riches field years back.

Arthur: What the reason for the move?
Tyler: The reason for my move to XSV is because I will be able to play paintball with some of my best friends in the world and build a team with Rich and Thomas and Junior that will be lasting and have room for tons of growth.

Arthur: Why did you choose XSV?

Tyler: I chose XSV because it’s time for me to give back to the community that raised me into the sport and helped me achieve the dream of becoming a professional paintball player. Without the community here in Modesto opening it’s field to me I don’t know where I would be today…..I definitely wouldn’t be as happy and as blessed as I am right now. I chose XSV because I am ready to build a team with the talent we have here in northern California and experience all of the joys that are sure to come with some of my best friends!

Arthur: Are you on XSV for PSP and NPPL?

Tyler: I am on Sacramento XSV for the PSP x-ball format, and I am still going to be playing for Oakland BLAST in the USPL 7-man format. This is going to be an amazing season!

Arthur: Whats in store for Tyler Harmon after school finishes?

Tyler: Watch out world!!! I dream of being able to travel to as many countries as I possibly can, and play paintball with everyone!! I would love to get on a team in Europe, and Canada, and Australia and share the love of paintball all around the world with as many people as I possibly can! Paintball is such a blessing to me and I would have no greater pleasure in life than experiencing this blessing with as many people around the world as I possibly can.

Thank you giving me the opportunity to tell you about my up and coming season with XSV.

God bless everyone!

Tyler Harmon

PPB Exclusive: First look at Dynasty shooting PE

PPB Exclusive: First look at Dynasty shooting PE

Pro Paintball photographers caught Dynasty practicing with their new Ego and GEO paintball guns over the weekend at Camp Pendleton paintball park in Oceanside, CA. Saturday, San Diego Dynasty spent the day running drills and learning the field. Dynasty spent Sunday scrimmaging against the Los Angeles Ironmen and the games were pretty evenly matched. About 30 points were played and we were able to confirm that both former Philly American player Chad George and Glenn Takemoto of Infamous were present with their new team.

Here’s a first look at Dynasty shooting Planet Eclipse paintball guns:
